Activity 4 Analyzing - Writing assignment

Level: 9th-grade L2 learners - Mid-level

Time: 2 sessions (60 minutes each)

Norwegian curriculum:

Goal:
  • You should be able to interview a classmate about a subject.
  • You should be able to find more information about the subject online.
  • You should be able to organize the information you have and write an article. 
Technologies:

I want the students to take the interview a little further. This time they should interview a classmate about a hobby or interest. They should take notes. Then they should read up on the subject so that they have enough information to write down the interview in a news article. They will have access to a computer in the Through and Beyond stages. That way they can write the article and search for more information online. I have listed Google as technology. They will now use what they have learned about netiquette. Therefore the information they use; they have to find themselves.

Into: 30 minutes. 
The students have information about how to use the internet, and how to interview someone. They should now use this to interview someone in their class. They should work in pairs and interview each other. The theme here is a hobby or an interest. So they should interview each other about this, and get as much information as they can. They should write the information they get in the interview down, so they can use it in the writing process.

Through: 30 minutes
When they are done with the interview they should get a computer. They should now research the hobby/interest. They should get as much information as they can. They should use what they know about the internet and chose their sources wisely. The more information they can gather, the easier it will be for them to write the article.


Beyond: 60 minutes

They should organize the information they have gathered. They should organize it and use what they feel is most important to write the article. They should use both what they found out during the interview and the information they gathered online.
There should be a reference list. They have to let the teacher know where they have found the information they have used in the article. They will deliver the article to the teacher when it is finished. They will be given feedback on the assignment.

Goals:
  • You should be able to interview a classmate about a subject. - The teacher will observe and talk with the students as they are working. There will also be an evaluation of their work. That way the teacher will both see and read what they have learned. 
  • You should be able to find more information about the subject online. - This goal will be shown to the teacher in the finished product. The students should implement the information in the article. So the teacher will see how much information they have gathered and where they have found it. 
  • You should be able to organize the information you have and write an article. - They have to hand in their article to the teacher. That way the teacher will find out if they have been able to do a good interview, find the information they needed and organize it well.
Reflections:
This activity takes a lot of work and the students have to analyze all the information they gather. For some students, this task will be easy and fun, but for someone else, it can be hard. The teacher should always be available and help the students that need help. I have chosen to only give feedback on this assignment, and not give them a grade. To make this activity even better, the students should hand it in again after they have received the feedback. That way they can improve their writing and learn from the feedback they are given by the teacher. This will take additional time, but it will help the students get better at writing, and be able to work more with their article.
