Activity 3 Applying - Interview

Level: 9th-grade L2 learners - Mid-level.

Time: 1 session (60 minutes)

Norwegian curriculum:
  • Velge og bruke ulike lytte og talestrategier tilpasset formålet.
  • Innlede, holde i gang og avslutte samtaler om forskjellige emner ved å stille spørsmål og følge opp innspill.
Goal:
  • You should know what an interview is and how to do it.
  • You should be able to interview a student about a specific topic.
  • You should be able to ask questions and follow up on the answers.
Technologies:
  • Computer
  • Youtube - Youtube is a great way for the students to find and research interviews, and for the teacher to show them interviews. Here they can watch different ways to be interviewed and to give an interview.
  • Phone/camera - They have the opportunity to take a photo to go with the interview, that is why they need a phone or a camera. Some might not have it, but the computer has a camera. So if they do not have a phone or a camera, they can use a computer.
Into: 20. minutes.
They should now use the information they have been given about grammar and privacy. The teacher needs to find out how much they know about interview situations. Do they know what an interview is? Do they think they can interview someone?
An interview situation is a situation they might not be that familiar with. The teacher will pick three students that volunteer to interview. The teacher will interview one student at a time and follow up on the answers given by the student. In one of the interviews, the teacher should demonstrate how the interview can go if you do not follow up on the answers, and are not interested in the answers. That way the interview will be more like a conversation, there will be a flow in the interview. By interviewing three different students, they will see the difference and how it can turn out with different people. Then the teacher will show the students a few more examples from Youtube. The teacher asks the students if they have any questions and if they understand how to interview.

Through: 30 minutes.
They will be divided into groups of four, where two and two work together. Since they are four students, they should rotate, so that they have a chance to interview different people. They will use the first 10 minutes on youtube, where they can find interviews and research and find out how they want to do it.
There are some rules for this assignment. They are allowed to say no comment. The interviewer should respect this and ask about something else.  If they want to take a picture of the person they are interviewing, they should ask for permission. They should also get the person to agree to the picture chosen. They should also focus on their grammar, and use what they have learned about wh-questions.
They will interview each other about each other's hobbies. They should follow up on the answers to make it more like a conversation. Then they should switch. Everyone on the groups should interview each other, so they do not have that much time to spend on each other.

Beyond: 10 minutes.
When the students have interviewed one another, the teacher should have a conversation with the students at the end of the class. They should talk about how they felt this exercise was? What did they like best? Being the interviewer, or the one being interviewed? Did they get a flow in the conversation? Do they know the difference between being interested and follow up on the answers, and just asking questions after questions?

Goals:
  • You should know what an interview is and how to do it.  - The teacher asks the students at the beginning and at the end of the class. They are also shown how to do it, both live and on Youtube. That way the teacher will have given the students enough information to do this themselves.
  • You should be able to interview a student about a specific topic. - The teacher will walk around, listening to the students, listen to how they are doing and what they are talking about.
  • You should be able to ask questions and follow up on the answers. - The teacher is walking around in the classroom while the students interview each other. and at the end of the class, the teacher has a conversation with the students about this. So the teacher should have an idea if the students have reached this goal.
Reflections
This is an assignment that can be done in many different ways. The students should probably have more than 30 minutes to research interviews and interview each other.
The goals here is a bit difficult to measure. It is difficult to find out if all the students have understood and reached the goals. The teacher will find out that some have reached it, but not everyone. By walking around, observing the students, the teacher should have an idea. The conversation at the end of class will give the teacher more information. But not everyone will say something. So this is a task that might be better in smaller groups at a time.
