Activity 1 Remember - Netiquette: privacy and copyright

All the 6 activities I have designed are connected and are meant for the same class.

Level: For 9th-grade L2 learners - Low-level.

Time: 1 session (60 minutes).

Norwegian curriculum:
  • Kjenne til personvern og opphavsrett og velge og bruke innhold fra forskjellige kilder på en etterprøvbar måte.
Goal:
  • You should be able to retrieve information about privacy and copyright on the website given by the teacher.
  • You should know why privacy and copyright are important.
  • You should know why some sites are more reliable than others.
Technologies:
  • Computer
  • Website: https://www.dubestemmer.no/en/9-13-ar/privacy
I choose this website because it is a really good site, that explains it well to this age group. This is a reliable page and a good place for students to get information. They can come back to this page later if they need information about social media, privacy etc. It is not only information about what they are allowed to do, but what others are allowed to do or not to them.  When working with different technologies, students need to be able to know some of the rules and guidelines for how to use the internet.
I chose Ages 9-13 because it covered and explained netiquette, privacy and copyright the way I wanted and that I felt where important.

Into: 10. minutes.
Starting the lesson I want to find out what the students already know about netiquette and how to use the internet. Most of the students already have a computer and a smartphone. So they should have some knowledge about the internet and how to use it. The teacher should find out what they know. Do they know what privacy, copyright and source criticism means? Do they use the internet a lot? Is anybody on social media? (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc.) Do they know the rules?

Through: 30 minutes.
The students will be given a computer each. They should go into the website: dubestemmer.no. If English has not been chosen as a language, they should choose it. They should choose the Ages 9-13. They have to look around the site and read the information they find to find answers to questions. Then they have to find answers to these questions:
  • What does privacy mean?
  • Can you post pictures of your friends without asking?
  • What are personal data?
  • Who has to give permission for someone to post information or a picture of you online?
  • What does copyright mean?
  • Can you share music, movies and pictures without the person who owns the rights allowing it?
  • Is everything you watch and read true?
  • When you use a picture or text do you have to site where you found it?
  • Is Google a source?
  • Are you responsible for who you are and what you do online?
They should write down their answers, they need them for the last exercise of the session. Teacher walks around, helping and asking the students questions.

Beyond: 20 minutes.
There will be a coversation about this topic at the end of the class. They should bring their notes and have a computer ready. They will work in groups of four where they talk about these topics:
  • Why is it important to respect the copyright and always share your sources?
  • Why is privacy so important? Can you share a photo of someone without their permission?
  • Are all the information you find on the internet true? Why, why not?
I chose a conversation because I want the students to think for themselves, and talk about why these this is important to be aware of. It is important to know how to use the internet properly and how to behave.  Using someone's work without giving up the source, or not respecting someone's privacy is not a good way to use the internet.  The teacher should walk around, listening to the discussions to see what the students have found out during their search.  The teacher should also ask the students why privacy and copyright are important, and if they know why some sites are more reliable than others.

Goals:
  • You should be able to retrieve information about privacy and copyright on the website given by the teacher. - By walking around, talking with the students and observing the teacher should be able to see if they are able to retrieve information from a website.
  • You should know why privacy and copyright are important. - When they are discussing the teacher should walk around asking about this. Some might already have covered this topic when the teacher arrives, so it is important to ask in every group.
  • You should know why some sites are more reliable than others.  - This is also a question the teacher should ask the students.
Reflections:
There will always be some students that do not have as much information as the other students. So the teacher has to walk around and see how they are doing. Some will find the information fast, some will struggle. Here it is important to see if some of the students should work in pairs.
Some of the students might find it difficult talking infront of the class or large groups, that is why it is important to let them bring their notes. This is to find out if they have found the information and to see what they have learned. By dividing them into small groups it is easier for them to talk more freely, than taking the conversation with the whole class. This way all the students will have a change to talk.
